ARTIST STATEMENT

MY WORK SEEKS TO CONFRONT THE COMPLEXITIES OF COLLECTIVE MEMORY, FOCUSING ON THE EROSION AND EVOLUTION OF FACT INTO FICTION THROUGH THE PASSAGE OF TIME AND THE TRADING OF INFORMATION FROM ONE GENERATION TO THE NEXT. I AM FOCUSING ON THIS TRANSITORY EXCHANGE, AN EXCHANGE WHICH LEADS TO THE WARPING AND ROMANTICISATION OF INFORMATION, INCREASING THE INHERENT ELUSIVENESS OF TRADITIONS WHICH CONSTITUTE THE FOUNDATIONS OF MODERN SOCIETY.
THROUGH SCULPTURE, PERFORMANCE, AND TEXT I EXPLORE THE MATERIALITY OF HISTORICAL AND PRESENT CONTEXTS AND HOW THESE ARE INEXORABLY WEAVED. FOR ME, MATERIALS SUCH AS CONCRETE HOLD AS MUCH NUANCE AS THE WRITTEN WORD, AND THE PERIODS OF TIME BEFORE AND AFTER A PERFORMANCE ACT AS BORDERS WHICH FRAME THE EVENT WITH A PARTICULAR RESIDUE. I FIND A CONNECTION HERE WITH THE MISREPRESENTATION OF HISTORY: PEOPLE THAT EXPERIENCE EVENTS EVENTUALLY PASS AND WHEN EVERYONE WHO EXPERIENCED THE EVENT IS GONE THEN ALL THAT REMAINS IT THE ERODING, COLLECTIVE MEMORY.
AS SUCH, THE MISTRANSLATION OF TEXT IS SIGNIFICANT IN MY WORK. THIS DISTORTION OF INFORMATION LEADS TO GAPS IN UNDERSTANDING AND IT IS WITHIN THESE TRANSIENT INTERVALS THAT MY WORK ATTEMPTS TO RESIDE. HOWEVER I DO SEE MYSELF FIRST AND FOREMOST AS A SCULPTOR, IT IS JUST  A SERIES OF VARYING MATERIALS THAT ARE MANIPULATED AND SCULPTED. THE INARTICULATE SPACES AND THE QUESTIONS WHICH ARISE FROM THEM; JUST AS ARCHITECTURAL FORMS ARE PASSED DOWN AND WARPED, MY PRACTICE RESIDES IN THIS LIMINAL SPACE.
